Fundación EMALAIKAT’s work in Malawi boosted thanks to special aid from Laboratorios Viñas

08-06-2017

This year, Madrid was the city chosen to celebrate the 45th Spanish National Dermatology Congress organised by the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (AEDV).

Once again, the Congress featured the announcement and presentation of economic aid contributions arranged by the Fundación Piel Sana, a not-for-profit foundation launched by the AEDV, intended to promote and fund healthcare intervention projects designed to improve dermatological health in different parts of the world, proposed and run by NGOs, private or not-for-profit organisations and individuals.

Continuing in its tradition of corporate action, Laboratorios Viñas provided one of the two contributions granted each year. In 2017, the project receiving the first prize of 12,000 € sponsored by Viñas was presented by Fundación EMALAIKAT. Its goal is to improve the dermatological health of the population in Malawi’s Benga region, Nkhotakota, with Dr. Cristina Galvan and Dr. Marc Corbacho acting as the key project leads and collecting the prize during the gala.

This project has a range of objectives:

- Its global objective is to improve dermatological health in the Benga region;

- Its specific objectives are:

It is hoped that, through these initiatives, dermatological diseases among the region’s children will be reduced thanks to the improved diagnostic and therapeutic capacities of the healthcare professionals working in the area. It is also hoped that dermatological and sexually transmitted diseases in adults will decrease, and that hygiene habits related to dermatological diseases in both children and adults will be improved.

The number of direct beneficiaries could reach 1,000 children and 500 adults, while the indirect beneficiaries could number between 5,000 and 6,000 people. And all of this in Malawi, a country where more than 40% of the population lives below the poverty threshold and lacks access to basic necessities according to data from the World Bank (2012).

This year, the 6,000 € aid from the Fundación Piel Sana was also granted to the Asociación Calor y Café, which takes in homeless people who are socially excluded.

Projects applying for the aid granted through the Fundación Piel Sana must comply with certain essential requirements, including: a concrete formulation with realistic results, performance indicators, an event schedule and itemised budget. They must also be directed towards a particularly underprivileged population and area, meet genuine needs and integrate with other initiatives in the area. They must have support from the local authorities and have a dermatological focus with clear and concrete healthcare repercussions to address diseases of epidemiological importance in the region.

In 2007, the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, a century-old medical society bringing together Spanish dermatologists, whose goal is to promote the study of the skin and its diseases for patients’ benefit, launched the creation of the Fundación Piel Sana, a not-for-profit organisation whose goal is to run and support initiatives promoting improved skin health in the population, be it through the promotion and sharing of knowledge on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and better health maintenance, or through the running of concrete initiatives in this regard.

Laboratorios Viñas is celebrating the fact that, for the third year running, they have been able to offer this aid at an event attended by a great many people, offering an outstanding platform to work in favour of solidarity. Of all healthcare areas, Viñas has always fostered close ties with and dedication towards the specialty of dermatology.
