Vaginal dryness and dyspareunia

The characteristics of the vaginal mucosa change throughout a woman's life, mainly influenced by hormone levels (oestrogens). To protect itself, the vaginal mucosa secretes a high amount of fluids to keep it moisturised, flexible and lubricated. The production of lubricating vaginal fluid, which is greater during sexual arousal, may be reduced (during the menopause for instance), contributing to the onset of vaginal mucosa susceptible to irritation and inflammation, causing pain during sexual relations (dyspareunia or coitalgia).
