Radio Salil and the CAR presented "How to be a good athlete"

19-01-2015

The CAR (High Performance Centre for athletes) and RADIO SALIL joined forces once again to pass on their knowledge of sports medicine, which has been acquired over many years, and shared it with pharmacists across Spain.

The last study made by both institutions has been summarised in a list of "Recommendations for health in sport", ten tips to help athletes enjoy their sports and pharmacists give them the best possible advice. The guidelines include the following:

1.- Healthy habits and hygiene: “Start by looking after yourself”

2.- Realistic schedule and training plan: "Organise your training plan"

3.- Equipment and material: "Choose the right material"

4.- Get advice "Hydration and nutrition: “Make sure you recover the energy you consume"

5.- Preparing for physical exercise: “Warm up before each session"

6.- Recovery and active cooling down: "The recovery is part of training"

7.- Supplements: "Do you need supplements? Get advice"

8.- How to approach the competition: "Enjoy competing"

9.- Sport at different times of life: "A lifetime enjoying sport"

10.- The most common injuries: "Running injuries"

To inform pharmacists of these conclusions so they can advise athletes who go to their pharmacies, Radio Salil and the CAR plan to present the guidelines at different pharmaceutical societies across Spain over the year.

The first presentations took place at the societies of Barcelona and Murcia on 20 and 27 November, respectively. They were attended by more than 300 of the societies’ members, who enjoyed the speakers' explanations of the theory and took part in a practical experience to see the advice in action.

The speakers were multi-discipline experts from the CAR: Doctor Til, Head Physician at the CAR of Sant Cugat, the Health Consortium of Terrassa and coordinator of this project; Doctor Bellver, Miguel Ángel Cos, Physiotherapist at the CAR of Sant Cugat and the RFEA (Royal Federation of Athletics of Spain), the Olympic athletes Erika Villaécija, World and European swimming champion and Olympic champion, Athens 2004, Peking 2008 and London 2012, and Alba Cabello, silver-medallist in synchronised swimming at the Peking Olympic Game 2008, and bronze-medallist at the London Olympic Games 2012.

The practical was supervised by the physiotherapist with the help of the Olympic medallists.
