Mal de dent

How does it occur?

The main causes of dental pain include pulpitis, which is usually referred to as “toothache”. Pulpitis is the inflammation of the connective tissue inside the tooth cavity, generally caused by caries, a microbial disease affecting 80% of the population to a lower or higher degree. Dental caries is responsible for the gradual disintegration of the tooth structure. First, enamel demineralisation occurs. As the process continues and reaches the dentin, the destruction is much faster and the characteristic discomfort starts to become noticeable: pain, sensitivity to hot and cold, etc. When the process is more advanced and the pulp is involved, dental pain or odontalgia have a greater presence. Imprecise but persistent pain usually occurs, which increases at night.

Periodontitis or periodontal disease, which is less prevalent than dental caries (between 16 and 30% of the population suffers from it), is also a common cause of dental pain. It is a degenerative, irreversible inflammatory disease caused by specific bacteria affecting the tissues supporting the teeth. It generally occurs by the inflammation spreading from a gum (gingivitis) to the adjacent bone. Pain in periodontitis increases with chewing and can become very severe when the bone, muscle, joints and ligaments are involved.
