Bone is a living tissue that is constantly being remodelled and replaced. Its size, resistance and mineralisation increase during the growth stages, reaching its maximum in the third decade of life.

Loss of bone mass

It then leads to progressive and slow unavoidable calcium loss, thereby leading to a loss of bone mass and density, which affects the bone microarchitecture (osteoporosis).

In women, reduced oestrogen during the menopause speeds up this process. These changes involve a reduction in bone resistance and an increased fragility and susceptibility to fractures.

Osteoporosis is also related to several diseases and treatments and is influenced by hereditary, environmental and lifestyle factors.
