Cough

The airways can be attacked by external agents such as tobacco smoke and industrial dust or specific pathogens attacking or destroying its defence mechanisms or causing a function disorder.

Why does cough occur?

Coughs are among the most common symptoms of respiratory disorders. Coughs are very common at any age, particularly in children, and are a clinical sign of many pathological conditions.

Whether a reflex or voluntary act, coughing is a sudden, noisy and violent movement of air designed to protect the lungs and airways. It originates as a response to an irritating stimulus, such as cumulative secretions, irritant gases, especially cold or hot air, bacteria, viruses and foreign bodies, and can become self-perpetuating.
