Respiratory conditions are very common in children, especially during the first three years of life.

Although they can appear at any time, most of them are seasonal, and they mainly occur during the colder months of the year.

Respiratory illnesses usually cause mild symptoms in children, but they are one of the main causes of school absenteeism.

Symptoms of these conditions appear when certain viruses invade cells in the upper airways (nose, nasal cavity, mouth, pharynx, and larynx), triggering inflammation and mucus production. This leads to the classic cold symptoms in children: nasal stuffiness, runny nose, throat irritation and a cough, which can last for days.

It must be taken into account that infants and younger children are not able to describe their symptoms clearly, so a warning sign is that they appear irritable and upset.

Children do not generally need to go to the paediatrician for a common cold, since the symptoms are usually mild and disappear within a few days.

And these mild conditions can be usually relieved at home by encouraging rest and maintaining proper ventilation and humidity in their bedroom.
